Gambling addiction recovery took a personal turn for Christina Cook. Her story began when she left her mother’s hospital bedside, following a heart attack, to visit a casino. That very day, she experienced her first jackpot win.
Facing an abusive relationship, Cook turned to gambling as an escape. “My abusive relationship kind of continued to get worse,” Cook explains. “Gambling became my outlet. Although I won a lot, I also lost control over my finances. Bills became secondary, merely gambling money.”
Seeking support, she joined Gamblers Anonymous but found the services impersonal. This prompted her to establish the Broke Girl Society, a safe space for women recovering from gambling addiction. The initiative includes a bi-monthly podcast, weekly discussions, and a YouTube channel, connecting over 3,000 women who share their experiences.
Gambling Addiction Recovery Among Women
At a male-dominated Gamblers Anonymous meeting, Cook felt disconnected. “I knew women had been impacted too,” she recalls. Her community began on Instagram, where she noticed that women’s stories often mirrored men’s.
Her gambling addiction blossomed amidst personal challenges: a cancer diagnosis and loss of motherhood. These ties to her gambling went unrecognized until she related to a TV program on food addiction. “The anticipation, the euphoria, echoed my gambling habits,” Cook reflects.
Addressing her personal issues, especially her addictive relationship, reduced her gambling urge. “Beyond gambling for me was a coping mechanism,” Cook says.
Cook aims to spark a conversation on women-specific gambling addiction. Her goal is not to battle the gaming industry but to talk openly about how gambling impacts women. Current narratives around sports betting often overlook women’s issues, which presents a barrier to care and understanding.
